Donkervoort lifts Vanguard over Hilo
Costa Mesa, Calif – Sophomore Damia Donkervoort battled to a three-set win at number three singles to hand NAIA third-ranked Vanguard University a 5-4 decision over NCAA Division II University of Hawaii, Hilo this afternoon in women’s tennis action.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the non-conference match as Donkervoort and Natalie Kelley recorded an 8-5 win at number three doubles and VU’s number one team (Hana Jurcovicova and Amy Brown) pulled out a 9-8 victory. Olivia Amstad and Tiffany Teerawat lost 8-3 in the other doubles pairing.
Following losses by Brown (6-0, 6-0), Teerawat (6-0, 6-3), and Amstad (6-0, 6-0), and a 6-2, 6-0 victory by Kelley, the Lions found themselves trailing 3-4 with only two singles matches undecided.
Needing only one win to secure the victory, the Vulcans could not shut down the Lions. Jurcovicova persevered to a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Mai Jujii of Japan to even the match score 4-4, making Donervoort’s match the deciding point. Holding a 1-0 lead after a 6-2 victory in the first set, Donkervoort led 3-0 in set number two. Her UHH counterpart, Wendy Owen, stormed back for a 6-4 win in the second set, forcing a third and final set to be played. Donkervoort fell behind 2-1 before winning the next five games straight for a match-winning 6-2 score.
Vanguard University improved to 11-2 with their first non-conference win of the season. The Lions return to the courts tomorrow with a GSAC match against Westmont College. Action begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
